Phones

When calling home, you can always dial directly from your hotel room but this may cost a bundle. I suggest that you use a calling card. If you do not have one, you can get a card in Prague from the post office, newsstands and “Tabak” shops. The rate is about $1 a minute to the USA and Australia. Another good way to save is to use the off peak xCall program (weekdays 5pm-7am and 24 hours on weekends) and dial 052 followed by the country code, area code and the number. In this case you will pay only 8 Kc a minute to the USA. You can also use pre-paid calling card called xCard, which is good for calling from any phone within the Czech Republic. You will pay only 3 Kc a minute for local calls, 15 Kc to the US, 23 Kc to Australia. To call out of the Czech Republic dial 00 followed by the country code, area code and the number. For an international operator dial 0135. The country code to the Czech Republic is 420, to Slovakia 421. Area code to Prague is 02.

Cell Phones

As everywhere in Europe, GSM users will have roaming on their regular phones. If you have a phone from the American provider, it will most likely not work. You can however rent one from the Eurotel for $30 for three days. Use the Eurotel stand at the airport or call 67016666 A word of caution, if driving in the Czech Republic, remember than using a hand-held cell phone is prohibited.

Post:

Do you like to send cards home? Buy stamps at the post office or from newsstands. Drop your letters in the orange mailboxes everywhere in the city. Air Mail to Europe is 9 Kc for a letter, 7 Kc for a postcard. Air Mail to the US or Australia is 11 Kc for a letter, 8 Kc for a postcard.

Internet Cafes:

As always, Internet is a good way to keep in touch and up-to-date. There are plenty of the Internet cafes in Prague but many of them have a very slow connection and a very few computers. Here is a list of decent connection Internet cafes in Prague:

  • Planeta, Vinohradska 102, 15Kc/10min, open daily from 8 am to 10 pm
  • Netwave, Na bojisti 8, 40Kc/30min, open Monday to Friday from 11 am to 11 pm, Saturday 3 pm to 11 pm. Closed on Sunday
  • Golden Rose, Thunovska 20, 30Kc/15min, open daily from 10 am to 7 pm
